This is a practical interactive course that will help participants to feel more equipped to take part, run and be effective in meetings of all types. An initial assessment will be completed at the start of the day. Case studies and discussions are a key part of the training and will be designed with the commissioner to reflect real life examples as much as possible. A certificate of attendance is issued at the end of the course and participants will self-assess their learning achievements with a reflective journal and course evaluation.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for those candidates who would like to learn the skills of managing meetings.

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of good meetings and understand why some meetings fail
  • Describe the purpose, structure and types of meetings
  • List the roles and responsibilities in meetings
  • Deal with barriers to effective meetings
  • Reflect on own part played in meetings and review individually
  • Practice skills required for effective participation, agendas, minutes, action points
  • Properly review a meeting after it is complete and set objectives for improvements

The chairing part of the session will prepare participants to run effective meetings by:

  • Identifying the characteristics of a good chair
  • Discussing structure and control
  • Dealing with barriers to effective chairing
  • Preparing for meetings in public
